Deer population control

We control the deer population growth so they do not overgraze, use up the resources, destroy the ecosystem and place their own population at risk. Shouldn’t we do the same for ourselves?

That is a very loaded question. Since blogland is a bit anonymous I would say yes, we need some form of human population control. That said, I do have a child and am trying for a second. But that's where I stop.

I even feel guilty wanting two children, but I figure my sister has stopped with one child and my husband's brother only has and wants one child. So within our little family we have negative growth.

I get angry when I hear people wanting four or five kids. Often they stop after two when they realize how expensive they are. I think until it's unaffordable to have a big family people will still do it.

China might have the right idea. Although I think a limit of two kids might be more humane on parents. I really would like to give my little girl a sibling. But just ONE sibling!

Excellent discussion. -kate

That is a very insightful question. The answer may depend on which culture or country a person responds from. Here in the US the average family is two children, but in other parts of the world they have many more and some of them are the poorest in the world too. Since the US has the resources, I beleive it should be our responsibility to educate third world countries on population control.

kate, Rae, that you both for your comments. It is a touchy issue and I applaud your participaton. Like most things I think it comes down to individual choices and respect for those choices. Makeing informed choices are everyone's responsibility. Thank you both.

Thank you for raising this subject. It is probably THE SINGLE MOST Important issue for the environment. I had two children. One of them has had two children and that seems to be it for my reproductive impact. As much as I love my grandkids, what good is having children is we are leaving them so much environmental degradation? I cringe to think of what they will face in their lifetimes if we don't make some drastic changes NOW!

Too many of a specie will unbalance the ecosystem. But deers are so cute.

Trillium, thanks for your input. I certainly agree. I think this issues needs to be added to the sustainable living dialogue that the nation seems to be having at this time it isn't just about food and the environment it is about our entire lifestyle.

AutumBell, I know deer are so cute. I saw two fawns on my home yesterday but I look at the understory of the forest I live in and know they will have a hard time this winter and probably one of them will starve. I don't want my friends to worry about their children and grandkids in the same way, worring if they will be able to survive in the future environment.

I agree that it is a loaded question as it involved what people feel is their right or in the case of some religions, their obligation. I have thought that we humans took it for granted that we had the right to all of the resources because we are smarter and more capable... but do we have that right over any other creature? I personally don't feel that we do... Great post... Michelle
