Thank you all for your nice comments. I don't know what the plant it but my nature nerd friend pointed out that it is a fibonacci pattern. The desert has so many interesting and different plants.
That is an interesting plant and looks like something you would not even want to touch. The desert has a lot of beauty to offer if we took time to look for it. I have something for you if you can drop by today.
Echinocactus grusonii is called mother-in-law's armchair in German - sorry, was my first thought, ;-). The photo is very nice in b/w, emphasises the details.

Definitely not a seat suitable for relaxed contemplation, but a great shot in B&W.
