October Snow

By now everyone has probably heard that there was an unsually early snow along the east coast of North America. West Virginia was a part of the area covered and my house was no exception.  Here are a few of the photos I took the day it snowed from 8 until 6 p.m.

It was very strange to see snow on the green, gold and red foliage and it was very beautiful.
It just so happened that that day was the first day of the West Virginia Winter Bird count so I had my new feeder up along with suet cakes and was watching the snow and counting the birds. You can see a slightly blurry Titmouse on the shepherds hook just in front of the feeder.
This was the view from my deck into the woods below.
View of side yard.
The snow was coming down very hard.

Throughout the day limbs were crashing all around the house. This one came crashing down onto the deck destroying my new bird feeder. Lucky for the birds I had bought two because the squirrels chew them up so I had a spare. My neighbor heard the crash and came over to help me push it over the rail down into the yard below.
By this time I was without power. I stayed the night but left the next day to stay with friends in the DC so I could go to work. The power was off until Tuesday.
This was my favorite photo of the whole event with the cardinal waiting it's turn to come to the feeder. The top of this red maple had come down on the deck but the lower branches were still in tack and survived partly because I was able to knock some of the snow off.
The next moring the sun came up as usual.
This is the few of the road in front of my house and my escape route to electricity and warmth.

  5. Nice photos from your Snowtober. I had about 10 inches of snow and was also out of power. I went around pulling on lower tree branches to attempt to knock off the snow where I could--didn't save many, that's for sure. I got power back late on Monday but didn't get the phone back until a day later. I'm still cleaning up the mess
